What is Needle Felting?
Needle felting is an effective and versatile craft technique used for both artistic and practical purposes.

Needle Felting is defined as: Definition of Needle Felting
Needle felting is a dry felting technique which involves using specially designed needles to manipulate wool fibers. Artists and craftspeople employ needle felting for creating sculptures from wool fibers or to embellish textiles with wool embellishments. Thin, notched needles (some people incorrectly refer to them as barb-less needles) are used in needle felting in order to entangle and lock fibers together into place.

History and Development of Needle Felting
Needle felting has its origins in the 1980s and was first pioneered by David and Eleanor Stanwood as an art form. They used needles from a wool factory to craft handmade felt without resorting to water or soap. Later, Ayala Talpai adopted these skills and taught others.

Ancient civilizations like Egypt, Turkey and China used needle felting to enhance textiles for both practical and decorative uses. Europe–specifically Scandinavia–commonly employed intricate woolen designs inspired by nature; while needle felting was frequently employed to craft adorable characters or traditional motifs.

Needle felting is used to create soft sculpture, dolls, figurines and two dimensional wool paintings. Artists may create:
- Home Decor: Such as trendy lamps, posters, frames, fleece blankets, plush items, pillows and candles are some popular decor pieces that add flair to a space.
- Realistic animal sculptures: Many artists specialize in crafting lifelike wild and farm animal statues for display, while decorative pieces like snowmen, pumpkins, or holiday-related pieces provide festive seasonal decor.

Needle felting is an effective and creative way to create unique jewelry and accessories:
- Pendants and earrings: Crafting felt ball necklaces, acorn earrings and other inventive jewelry designs from felt balls.
- Accessories: Socks, jewelry, hair accessories, cozy loungewear and t-shirts.
- Bracelets and rings: Wearable designs such as Autumn Fox Bangle and Midsummer Rose Corsage for everyday wearability.

Needle Felting Has Industrial Uses
Felting needles were initially developed for industrial machines that hold thousands of needles for producing felt on an industrial scale.
- Felt Production: It is one of the core methods in industrial felt making, while for commercial products this process is used to manufacture filters, liners and covers for tennis balls among others.

Process Characteristics of Needle Felting
Needle felting utilizes special needles with notches that grab and hook fibers as you poke into wool repeatedly. Over time, as the wool shrinks and becomes firmer as felting continues, so felters can utilize any number of fibers without being limited by scales found on protein fibers – and instead rely on their process of entwining instead.
